A couple of years ago I was off sick from work, suffering from flu. As I was whiling away the hours, I came across an episode of “Boon” being broadcast on Carlton Select, a repeats channel similar to ITV3 and UK Gold. “Boon” was one of my favourite programmes: I could remember watching the various series on ITV in the late eighties and early nineties. There was something about the characters of Ken and Harry that appealed to me – and maybe the fact that Elizabeth Carling and Saskia Wickham starred as Ken’s assistants also influenced me!
I wondered whether anyone had compiled an episode list. A quick search of the Web suggested that there wasn’t one, so I decided to start working on one myself. To begin with, I just noted the episode title and the main actors who appeared in each episode. By the time that Carlton Select repeated the seven series again, I’d decided to include the writer, director and producer of each episode as well. Finally I bit the bullet and started to summarise the plot of each episode and to include a full cast list. This is not a trivial task! The plot list is about two-thirds complete, with some of Series 1, 6 and 7 still to do. Most of the stories involved several parallel threads which were intertwined. For reasons of clarity I’ve tried to separate these where possible.
For those interested in the technicalities... I use FrontPage 2002 to maintain this site. Some of the original pages were created in WordPerfect 7 and then converted to HTML. I grabbed the pictures using an ATI All-in-Wonder 8500 graphics card at 768x576 pixels and then manipulated and resized them with Paint Shop Pro 5. I captured the sound clips using a Creative Labs AWE64 sound card and Syntrillium’s Cool Edit 2000 software to “top and tail” them. I sampled them at 22 or 44 kHz and 16 bits and then used CoolEdit to generate the RealAudio files (40kbit/sec).
