When “Boon” ended, there were several loose ends that needed tidying up. Presumably Harry had proposed to Mary and that was his “something” that he wanted to tell Ken. It looked as if Ken and Alex might get together. What about Rocky? What about Laura who had left CBS the previous year, feeling as if Ken and Harry were taking her for granted?
Here is how it all might have ended: an episode written by Alan Williams. See also the complete script.
CBS is up for sale, Ken wants out of the life as a private eye, and Harry and Mary are planning their big day. Mary wants to get married in Ireland but Harry wants to have it held at his friend Gerald Seymore’s Rotary Club. Harry’s aunt Lil has passed away and to his surprise she has left him £50,000 in her will (apparently she got this sum of money from a bingo win in Spark Hill in 1989 but had never spent it.) Harry is thinking of investing it in a property development taking place in Birmingham which Ken is trying his hardest to talk him out of… “Harry, have a day off mate! CBS is over, you are getting old and what the hell are you going to do with any money you make now at your time of life?!” Despite this Harry goes ahead with the investment without considering the consequences. The property developer Marshall Conden advises Harry to invest as much as he can in the development “You could become a very rich man Mr Crawford – this is going to be one of the biggest developments that has ever taken place in Birmingham in the last seven years.” Harry quickly finds a buyer for the CBS building who ends up being one Laura Marsh! “I have come a long way since I left, Harry.” Apparently Laura took up studying the mind of a private eye, started her own investigative agency ‘Marsh Investigations’ and is now seeking a new office. “Well Laura, I’d be buggered if I thought it was going to be you that I was to end selling the office to!” Rocky has saved up enough cash to buy a one way ticket to Australia “to find a way of life” as he gormlessly put it. But Ken wants him to reform Texas Rangers (which seems to be a wild idea – but he wants to be young again as he puts it.) But Rocky is not so sure it’s what he wants. Harry has sold CBS’ office to Laura and immediately invests his profit to Marshall Conden’s Property Development. He is feeling pleased with himself and takes Ken, Laura and Alex out for a big slap-up meal at one of Nottingham’s top notch restaurants, Jaz Mason Bistro. While there Ken gets talking to a young lady Mabeline Conden. He recognises the name and that night takes her home and she then invites him in for a drink. The night moves on and Ken mentions Harry. Mabeline looks stunned and throws Ken out leaving him rather gob-smacked. The next day Ken mentions this to Harry who immediately knows the surname but thinks it is just a coincidence. Ken is not so sure it is a coincidence and decides to investigate, starting with Marshall Conden’s office where he sees Mabeline talking to Marshall. He leaves and asks Rocky (an unknown face to the Condens) to check them out. Rocky heads there with Laura to discover a for sale sign being put up by an estate agent. Laura asks questions but they claim to have never heard of anyone by the name of Conden but that the owner’s name was Camden… Marston Camden. Harry still thinks there is a reasonable explanation and decides to go to the office himself where he is greeted by some heavies who warn him not to return or else he will be a dead man. It now looks to Harry as though he has been shafted by some crooks looking to get a helping hand out of Nottingham. Ken returns to Mabeline’s house but that is also up for sale. However he spots her getting into a car with Marshall, gets on his bike and follows them to a disused office building where he sees them handing a black briefcase to some heavy looking men. He continues to follow them and eventually manages to get to talk to them. At first Marshall threatens Ken, but when Ken says he is with the Police he agrees to speak to him. It seems that Marshall/Marston Camden became victims to a protection racket and was forced to end up selling. But as far as Harry’s money goes there is not much they can do. Harry wants to kill Marston, Ken talks him out of it and Laura now feels bad that the money she paid Harry for the CBS office is now nowhere to be seen but in someone else’s bank account so she tells Harry that she will sell it to try and help Harry get back at least some of the money. Harry at first refuses to let her do it but when Laura tells Harry that she will go halves with him and let him be her partner in her new detective agency he accepts the generous offer. Alex and Ken are having a meal at a country pub when they seem to be continuing the closeness that was shown a short time ago. Alex admits she has always had a thing for him but could never bring herself to admit it. Until now. Ken admits to feeling the same, much to Alex’s surprise, and he takes out a ring… and proposes. Alex rushes out of the pub in tears and right behind her Ken calls her name and says… “Alex I love you!”. She turns around and says… “Ken I… I will marry you.”… The distant sound of the intro to ‘Hi Ho Silver’ can be heard, leading into the vows that Ken and Alex make to each other at the altar… Harry and Rocky stood right behind, and a tearful Laura. As the chorus begins, Harry and Mary exchange vows – not at the Rotary Club, not in Ireland… but on the very famous ‘Boon Bridge’ just where it was suspected that the proposal had been made…
